He was one of the most powerful leaders of the Hittite Empire. His reign is famous for the Battle of Kadesh, a huge chariot battle against the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II. This battle was one of the largest ancient battles ever fought. Muwatalli II moved the Hittite capital city to a new location called Tarhuntassa during his rule.

Muwatalli I: An Early Hittite King

Muwatalli I was an earlier Hittite ruler from the 15th century BCE. Not as much is known about him compared to Muwatalli II. He was one of the kings who helped shape the early Hittite kingdom.

Neo-Hittite Kings

After the main Hittite Empire ended, several smaller kingdoms arose. These are often called Neo-Hittite states. Some of their rulers also carried the name Muwatalli.

Muwatalli of Kummuh

This Muwatalli was a ruler from the Neo-Hittite kingdom of Kummuh. He lived in the 8th century BCE. Kummuh was one of the smaller states that continued Hittite traditions after the empire fell.

Muwatalli I of Gurgum

Muwatalli I was a king of Gurgum, another Neo-Hittite kingdom. He ruled in the 10th century BCE. Gurgum was located in what is now southeastern Turkey.

Muwatalli II of Gurgum

Another king named Muwatalli ruled Gurgum in the 9th century BCE. He was the second ruler of Gurgum with this name.

Muwatalli III of Gurgum

The third king named Muwatalli from Gurgum ruled in the 8th century BCE. This shows how the name was passed down through generations in these ancient royal families.
