About the Book
This book shares amazing stories about the many dogs that were part of Gary Paulsen's life. Each chapter is about a different dog. Paulsen shows how each dog was not just a pet, but a true friend and companion. He describes their unique personalities and the special ways they helped him.
Meet the Dogs
The book introduces readers to several incredible dogs. Each one played an important role in Paulsen's life.
Cookie the Rescuer
The first dog Paulsen writes about is Cookie. She was a sled dog who saved him from a dangerous fall. Paulsen fell through thin ice while dog sled racing. Even though Cookie had been sick, she helped rescue him. Other sled dogs also helped in the rescue.
Snowball, His First Dog
Next, Paulsen tells the story of Snowball. Snowball was his very first dog. He owned Snowball when he was only seven years old. This happened while Paulsen lived in the Philippines. Sadly, Snowball was later killed in a military truck accident.
Ike the Loyal Companion
Paulsen then writes about Ike. Ike was a dog who became very attached to him. This happened during a hunting trip. Ike stayed with Paulsen for about a year. Then, Ike disappeared. Paulsen later found out that Ike's owner had to leave him when he went to war. When the owner returned, Ike went back to him.
Dirk the Protector
Dirk was a dog who "adopted" Paulsen during his teenage years. Dirk became a loyal protector. He helped Paulsen through a difficult time in his life.
Rex the Smart Collie
While working on a farm, Paulsen met Rex. Rex was a rough collie. Paulsen watched Rex's actions for a whole day. He realized Rex was one of the smartest dogs he had ever known.
Caesar the Gentle Giant
Paulsen later adopted a very large Great Dane named Caesar. Caesar was easily excited. However, he was a gentle giant who loved hot dogs.
Quincy the Brave Hero
Paulsen became a dog sled racer. At one point, he traded one of his best dogs for Quincy. Quincy was a very small dog, only nine inches tall. Despite his size, Quincy bravely saved Paulsen's wife from a bear!
Josh, the Smartest Dog
The last chapter is about Josh. Josh was Paulsen's dog when he wrote the book. It is clear that Josh was one of Paulsen's favorite dogs. He had the most stories to tell about Josh. At the time the book was written, Josh was about 20 years old. Josh was known as the smartest dog in the world.
