Myrianthus is a group of flowering plants that belong to the nettle family (called Urticaceae). These plants are mostly found in Tropical Africa. They are usually tropical trees, shrubs, or even lianas. Lianas are like woody vines that climb up other plants.
The leaves of these plants can be simple, with veins like a feather (pinnately veined), or shaped like an open hand (palmate structure). Myrianthus plants are also "dioecious." This means that each plant is either male or female. The male plants have only male flowers, and the female plants have only female flowers.
The leaves of a specific type, Myrianthus arboreus, are an important food in parts of Nigeria, like the Delta and Edo States. Local people there call this plant ujuju. The fruits of Myrianthus arboreus are also safe to eat.
Myrianthus Species
Scientists have described 13 different types of Myrianthus plants over time. However, only four of these are officially recognized as separate species today:
- Myrianthus arboreus
- Myrianthus holstii
- Myrianthus preussii
- Myrianthus serratus
