Early Life and Education
Mzwandile Masina was born on 2 September 1974. He grew up in the East Rand area, which is now part of Ekurhuleni. His family was involved in the fight against apartheid, which was a system of racial separation.
As a teenager, Masina became active in politics. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) and its youth group, the ANC Youth League. He was also a leader in student organizations like the Congress of South African Students. Masina studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Pretoria. He earned a Master's degree in entrepreneurship.
Before becoming a full-time politician, Masina worked in various government jobs. These roles often focused on economic development and helping businesses grow. In 2012, he became the chief executive officer of the Gauteng Film Commission.
In April 2013, Masina was chosen to lead the ANC Youth League temporarily. His job was to guide the league until new leaders could be elected.
Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry
In May 2014, Masina was elected to the National Assembly. This is the main law-making body in South Africa. Soon after, President Jacob Zuma appointed him as the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry. In this role, he worked alongside Minister Rob Davies.
In November 2014, Masina was elected as the chairman of the ANC's regional branch in the City of Ekurhuleni. He held this position for many years.
Mayor of Ekurhuleni
In June 2016, the ANC chose Masina as their candidate for Mayor of Ekurhuleni. After the local elections in August 2016, the ANC did not win a clear majority of votes in Ekurhuleni. End of Mayoral Term
In the 2021 local elections, Masina was nominated to run for mayor again. However, the ANC once more did not win a majority of seats in the council.
