History of N'dalatando

The area around N'dalatando has a very long history. It is quite close to Kabasa, which was once the historic heart of the Ndongo kingdom. This kingdom eventually grew into the Portuguese colony of Angola.

Name Changes Over Time

The Portuguese rulers named the town Salazar in 1936. This was done to honor António de Oliveira Salazar, who was a powerful leader in Portugal at that time. Later, its name was changed slightly to Vila Salazar.

On May 28, 1956, the town was officially recognized as a city. After Angola gained its independence on November 11, 1975, the government decided to change the name back. On July 18, 1976, the city officially became N'dalatando again. The history of this place can be traced back to the 1840s.
