Nagapattinam district is a special place in Tamil Nadu, India. It's unique because it's the only district in India that is split into two separate parts!
This district was created on October 19, 1991. It was formed by taking parts from the Thanjavur district.
In 2006, the Indian government looked at all the districts. They found that Nagapattinam district needed more help with development. It was one of 250 districts that needed extra support.
Today, Nagapattinam district is one of six districts in Tamil Nadu that gets special funds. These funds come from a program called the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). This program helps these areas grow and improve.
According to a count in 2011, Nagapattinam district had about 1,616,450 people living there. It also had more females than males. For every 1,000 males, there were 1,025 females. This is higher than the average for India.
