Nagle, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nagle, sometimes spelled Nogle, is what we call a "ghost town" in the southeastern part of Texas County, Missouri. A ghost town is a place where most or all people have left, leaving behind empty buildings or just memories. Nagle was once a small community, but today, only a few signs of its past remain.

What is a Ghost Town?

A ghost town is a place that was once a busy community but is now mostly empty. People might leave a town for many reasons. Sometimes, a mine closes, or a railroad changes its route. When jobs disappear, people move away to find work somewhere else. This leaves behind empty homes and businesses, making the town seem "ghostly."

Where Was Nagle Located?

Nagle was found in a beautiful part of Missouri. It was just east of Missouri Route 137. This road is still used today. The community was also north of a stream called the North Prong of Jacks Fork Creek. A local road in the area is even named Nagle Drive, helping us remember where the town once stood.

A Look Back: Nagle's History

Nagle was a small but active place for a while. It had a post office, which was very important for people to send and receive mail. The town was named after a person named C. H. Nagle. He was the first owner of the land where the community grew.

The Nagle Post Office

The post office in Nagle opened its doors in 1904. This was a big deal for the people living there. It meant they didn't have to travel far to send letters or get news. However, the post office only stayed open for about 21 years. It closed down in 1925. This was often a sign that a small town was shrinking.

The Nagle Christian Church

Even though the town itself faded away, one important building from Nagle's past is still there. The Nagle Christian Church was built in 1899. It has been standing for over 120 years! This church is a lasting reminder of the community that once thrived in this spot. It shows that even when a town becomes a ghost town, some parts of its history can remain.
