Nam-Hai Chua (born April 8, 1944) is a famous plant scientist from Singapore. A plant scientist, also called a botanist, studies plants and how they grow. He is a special member of the Royal Society in London, which is a group of very important scientists. Professor Chua used to be a professor at Rockefeller University in the United States. Now, he helps lead the Temasek Life Science Laboratory in Singapore.

His Journey in Science

Nam-Hai Chua started his education at the National University of Singapore. He earned his first science degree there. After that, he went to Harvard University in the United States. At Harvard, he earned two more advanced degrees, including his Ph.D., in 1969. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in many fields of study.

From 1969 to 1971, Professor Chua taught at the University of Singapore Medical School. In 1973, he joined Rockefeller University. He worked there for many years, doing important research on plants. He retired from the university and moved back to Singapore in 2016.

Awards and Special Recognitions

Professor Nam-Hai Chua has received many important awards for his work in plant science. These awards show how much his research has helped us understand plants better.

  • He became a member of the Royal Society of London in 1988.
  • He also joined the Taiwan Academica Sinica in 1988.
  • In 2006, he was recognized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
  • He received an honorary doctorate from NTU Singapore in 2008.
  • He was given the Singapore National Science and Technology Gold Medal in 1998.
  • In 2002, he received the Singapore Public Administration Gold Medal.
  • He won the International Prize for Biology in 2005. This is a very important award for biologists.
  • In 2017, he received the NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award from the National University of Singapore.
  • He is also recognized as a Pioneer Member of the American Society of Plant Biologists.
