About Nancy Calef

Nancy Calef was born in New York City. She was very smart and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science when she was only 15. She then received a scholarship to study painting and sculpture. This helped her become the amazing artist she is today.

Nancy has traveled all over the world. She has lived in places like Europe and Thailand. She has also explored many countries including Mexico, India, and Nepal. Since 1977, she has lived in San Francisco, California. Her art studio is in a lively area called North Beach.

Nancy Calef has written books too. She co-authored Peoplescapes: My Story from Purging to Painting. This book tells her personal story. The book shows 149 colorful pictures of her 3D oil paintings. She also talks about how art can help people.

She also helped write another book called Nothing But the Truth So Help Me God. Her artwork has appeared in books by other authors as well. Nancy often speaks at events about art and books. She is married to author Jody Weiner.

Nancy's Art

Nancy Calef's paintings are often described as showing people in everyday situations. They sometimes use humor to talk about important issues in society. She calls her special 3D paintings "Peoplescapes." She adds colorful details to these paintings. This includes sculptures, fabrics, and even objects she finds. Her Peoplescapes often highlight the interesting or sometimes crazy things in society.

Her art shows common experiences like a protest or a party. For example, in her painting "No Free Lunch," she shows a flight attendant selling gas masks. This helps to show that nothing in life is truly free.

Nancy's "Peoplescapes" capture social, political, and spiritual ideas. She weaves faces and objects together to tell a story. She often adds a bit of humor. She also uses recycled computer parts in some of her art. She turns old monitors and circuit boards into musical characters. This reminds us how much technology is a part of our lives.

Nancy has a unique technique called "plane slashing." This is where she tears or cuts an existing painting. Then, she combines it with other finished canvases. She adds sculptures and found objects to create something new. She is known as an eco-conscious artist. This means she cares about the environment and uses recycled materials in her art.

Many of Nancy's paintings focus on important issues in society. She has painted world leaders like Mikhail Gorbachev. Her painting Hashtag Dummy Potus was in a book about art during a past presidential time. Her art was also part of a project that responded to government policies. In 2021, she was named artist of the month by Art from the Heart in the UK.

Her painting "Modern Deluge" was shown in an art show in 2004. Her work has been part of several group art shows. In 2021, she won two awards for her painting Study in Contrast. She received second place for painting and third best in show.
