Nancy Horrocks (born Nancy Kitchin, 1900–1989) was a British artist. She is best known for her abstract paintings from the 1960s. Abstract art uses shapes, colors, and lines instead of showing things as they look in real life.
Life and Art of Nancy Horrocks
Nancy Horrocks was born in 1900 in Compton, Hampshire. She went to Winchester High School. After that, she studied art at two famous schools. She attended the Chelsea School of Art and then the Slade School of Fine Art from 1918 to 1920.
Exhibiting Abstract Art
Nancy Horrocks showed her abstract paintings often. She exhibited with the Women's International Art Club from 1958 to 1965. This was a group that supported women artists.
In 1961, her art was shown in Dallas, USA. She had exhibitions at the New Vision Centre Gallery and the Knott Gallery. The next year, her work was at the Grabowski Gallery.
She also showed her art in the mid-1960s. This included exhibitions with the Artists' International Association. Her paintings were also displayed at Heal's Mansard Gallery. She even had her own show in Belfast at the New Gallery. Her art was also seen at the Grosvenor Galleries. It was also shown in city art galleries in Bradford and Northampton.
Later Life and Homes
Nancy Horrocks was married to Lieutenant-General Sir Brian Horrocks. They lived in different places during their lives. They lived in St Ives, a beautiful coastal town. They also lived in London and Singleton in West Sussex. Later in her life, Nancy Horrocks moved to a nursing home in Cranleigh. She passed away in 1989.
