Nanny Matilda Hammarström (born March 23, 1870 – died December 3, 1953) was a Finnish teacher and a popular author. She is best known for writing children's books, especially stories about nature and animals.

Early Life and Teaching Career

Nanny Hammarström was born in Vaasa, Finland. She loved learning and became a teacher. She taught different subjects like mathematics, natural history (which is about plants and animals), and geography.

She taught at schools in several Finnish towns:

Nanny Hammarström lived in Loviisa for a long time. She was very involved in her community there. She was even a member of the town council from 1919 to 1923. Later, in 1930, she became the leader of the town's library board, helping to guide what books were available for everyone to read.

A Writer for Young Readers

Nanny Hammarström became famous for her children's books. She wrote many stories that focused on nature and the lives of animals. She even drew the pictures for her books herself!

She wrote eleven books in total, and they were very popular. Her first book, Två myrors äventyr (which means The Adventures of Two Ants), was published in 1906. This book was a big success and was translated into many languages, including Finnish, Norwegian, German, English, and Russian. This helped her stories reach children all over the world.

Another one of her well-known books was Vårvindarnas färd (The Spring Wind's Journey), published in 1929. In this story, the south wind travels north and tells about all the interesting things it sees along the way.

Her books often taught readers about how nature works and how different animals interact with each other. Years later, in 1979, two of her popular books, Två myrors äventyr and Svalparet Hirundo (The Hirundo Swallow Couple), were printed again so new generations of children could enjoy them. She also wrote two books called Barn och vuxna I–II (Children and Adults I–II), published in 1918 and 1920, which were about her own family.

Later Life

Nanny Hammarström passed away in Loviisa in 1953. She is also buried there, in the town where she spent much of her life teaching and writing wonderful stories for children.
