Early Life and School Days
Naomi Ekperigin was born and grew up in Harlem, a neighborhood in New York. Her father is from Nigeria, and her mother is from Detroit.
She went to the Dalton School and then to Wesleyan University, where she graduated in 2005. While in college, Naomi started doing comedy and improv, which is a type of acting where you make things up on the spot.
Naomi's Career in Comedy
After college, Naomi spent a year touring with the National Theatre for the Deaf. She then came back to New York in 2007. She began doing stand-up comedy while working at an art magazine.
When the magazine closed in 2013, Naomi got a job as a writer's assistant for the TV show Broad City. She quickly became a staff writer for the show's second and third seasons.
In 2015, Naomi and the Broad City writing team were nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award. This award is a big deal for TV writers. People praised her work as "savvy, smart, funny and politically active." Essence magazine even named her one of the "8 Black Comediennes Who are 'Ready' for SNL."
In 2016, Comedy Central announced that Naomi would have her own half-hour comedy special. She filmed it in New Orleans. Later that year, she made her first appearance on a late-night talk show, Late Night with Seth Meyers. Her comedy special then aired on Comedy Central.
Naomi also co-wrote a TV pilot for Comedy Central with Jessica Williams. She has also written for other shows like Difficult People and Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell.
