Starting a Make-up Career
Napoleon Perdis began his career by doing make-up for brides. In 1992, he opened his first make-up studio in Leichhardt, New South Wales.
In 1993, he won a make-up contest. His winning look was inspired by the singer Cher. This win earned him a trip to Los Angeles. There, he met Cher's make-up artist. Napoleon then became the person who sold 'Taut' make-up products in Australia.
He sold these products to brides and hair salons. Later, he decided to create his own make-up brand. Over time, his brand changed names, finally becoming Napoleon Perdis in 1994.
Growing the Business
In 1995, Napoleon Perdis opened his first official Napoleon Perdis store. It was in Paddington. He got a loan from his father to help start the store.
His wife, Soula-Marie, managed the company's money. His brother, Emanuel, became the managing director. Together, they helped the business grow.
In 2006, the Napoleon Perdis business expanded to the United States. They opened a main store in Beverly Hills, California. To save money, they set up a distribution center in Los Angeles. This helped them send products out more easily.
Napoleon Perdis products were sold in big American stores. These included Bergdorf Goodman and Nordstrom. However, in 2015, the company decided to leave the US market. Napoleon explained that doing business there was very expensive and not profitable enough.
New Product Lines and Partnerships
In 2008, Napoleon Perdis launched a more affordable make-up line called NP Set. This line was sold in Target stores in both Australia and the United States.
In 2012, Napoleon Perdis opened a special concept store. It was called Napoleon Perdis Life.Style. This store sold home items, furniture, and art that reflected his personal style. A second Life.Style store opened in 2013.
After a contract with David Jones ended in 2013, Napoleon Perdis started selling his products at Myer. Myer is another big department store. In 2015, he made a deal to sell his products in the Middle East.
In 2017, his daughter, Lianna, became the creative director for a new make-up line called Total Bae. In 2018, Napoleon Perdis partnered with the Priceline chain in Australia. Because of this, his products were no longer sold at David Jones.
Recent Business Changes
In early 2019, the Napoleon Perdis company faced some challenges. They had 56 stores across Australia at that time. About half of these stores had to close.
However, in April 2019, a company called KUBA investments bought Napoleon Perdis. They planned to rebuild the business. In June 2019, Napoleon Perdis himself stepped away from the daily running of Napoleon Perdis Cosmetics.
As of 2024, the Napoleon Perdis brand is still active and selling products. It has 25 stores and 250 independent sellers across Australia. They also offer make-up services in stores and at home. Their products can also be bought online in China.
