Nasi jinggo, also called jinggo rice, is a popular ready-to-eat street food from Bali, Indonesia. It comes in small, neat packages made from banana leaves. People enjoy nasi jinggo as a quick meal on the go. This special dish is also part of important events. It is served at religious ceremonies like the Ngaben funeral rites, birthday parties, and meetings.

What's in a Name?

The exact meaning of the word "jinggo" is a bit of a mystery. One idea is that before a big money crisis in 1997, nasi jinggo cost 1,500 rupiah. In the Chinese Hokkien language, "jeng go" means "one thousand five hundred."

Another idea is that the name comes from an old Italian movie called Django. There's also a story that it comes from the word jagoan. This word refers to Balinese motorcyclists who loved to eat nasi jinggo after a night out.

The Story of Nasi Jinggo

The history of nasi jinggo began in the 1980s. It was first sold on Gajah Mada Street in Denpasar, Bali. A husband and wife team from Java started selling it as a late-night snack. They set up their stand near the 24-hour Kumbasari Market. Because of its tasty flavor and easy packaging, nasi jinggo quickly became very popular. Its fame soon spread from Bali to other parts of Indonesia.

How Nasi Jinggo is Served

Nasi jinggo is always served in a banana leaf package. Inside, you will find a small amount of white rice. It comes with different side dishes and a spicy chili sauce.

Common side dishes include:

  • Sambal goreng tempeh: This is made from tempeh, anchovies, and peanuts fried with a spicy sauce called sambal.
  • Serundeng: This is grated coconut that has been sautéed until it's golden and flavorful.
  • Shredded chicken.

Sometimes, nasi jinggo is made with yellow rice instead of white rice. You might also find it with beef or pork as side dishes. Some versions even include mie goreng (fried noodles) and eggs.
