The Nathan Allen House is a really old and special house in Pawlet, Vermont. It was built around 1834 and is made of brick. This house is a great example of a style called "late Federal period" architecture. It's so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, which means it's recognized as a historic treasure!

Discovering the Nathan Allen House

The Nathan Allen House stands on the west side of Vermont Route 30. It is a few miles north of Pawlet's main village. The house is located in the rich, flat lands near the Mettawee River.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a two-and-a-half story building made of brick. It has smaller wooden sections attached to its right side and back. The house sits on a strong foundation made of rough, uncut stones. It also has fancy parts made from smooth marble and wood.

The front of the main house has five sections, called bays. The main entrance is in the middle. It has tall, narrow windows on either side of the door, called sidelight windows. The left side wall of the house was rebuilt in 1983. The original wall had fallen apart because it was very old.

Inside the Historic Home

The Nathan Allen House has four chimneys on its sides. Inside, the house has a "center-hall plan." This means there is a main hallway in the middle with rooms on both sides.

Over the years, the inside of the house has been changed quite a bit. However, some of its original features are still there. You can see a beautifully carved archway in the main hallway. One of the living rooms also has a fireplace with a fancy marble frame around it.

Who Was Nathan Allen?

The Nathan Allen House was built around 1834 for Nathan Allen. He was a farmer who owned and worked the land all around the house. Today, the land is owned by different people.

This house is very special because it's one of two almost identical houses built in this area. The other house was built for Nathan's brother, Elisha. These two homes are the best examples of the "late Federal period" style of architecture in the area.
