Nathaniel Paul's Fight Against Slavery

Nathaniel Paul was a Baptist minister. He used his voice to speak out against slavery. He believed that all people should be free.

A Speech for Freedom

In 1827, Paul gave a powerful speech. This speech celebrated the end of slavery in New York State. He spoke about how important it was for everyone to be free. He said that slavery would end everywhere, not just in some places. He believed this would happen soon.

Helping the Wilberforce Colony

Nathaniel Paul was very involved in helping the Wilberforce Colony in Canada. This was a settlement for African Americans. Many of these people had to leave Cincinnati, Ohio, because of violent attacks. The colony was named after William Wilberforce, a British leader who also fought against slavery.

Journey to the United Kingdom

To help the Wilberforce Colony, Paul traveled to the United Kingdom. He visited England, Ireland, and Scotland. His goal was to raise money and support for the colony. He stayed there from 1832 until 1835.

On January 14, 1832, a newspaper called The Liberator published a letter from Paul. In the letter, he wrote about his trip to England.

Returning Home

Paul returned from the United Kingdom in 1835. He had collected over $7,000 for the colony. However, his travel and living costs were more than $8,000. This meant the colony ended up with a large debt.

Later Life and Legacy
