Nathaniel Spens (born April 17, 1728 – died June 21, 1815) was a Scottish doctor. He first became a surgeon, which is a doctor who performs operations. Later, he became more interested in "physic," which means treating illnesses with medicines and advice, rather than surgery. He was a very important member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, even becoming its president.

Nathaniel Spens's Medical Journey

Nathaniel Spens came from the Spens family. His family owned a large area of land called Lathallan in Fife, Scotland. His father was Thomas Spens.

Becoming a Doctor

Nathaniel Spens started his medical career as a surgeon. He joined the Incorporation of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1751. This group was for surgeons in Edinburgh.

He also earned a medical degree (MD) from the University of St Andrews. After working as a surgeon, he decided to focus on a different type of medicine. He became interested in "physic."

Working with Physicians

In 1773, he joined the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. This college is for doctors who treat people with medicines. The next year, he became a full member.

He later became the treasurer of the college. In 1794, he was chosen to be the president. This was a very important leadership role.

Nathaniel Spens: A Skilled Archer

Nathaniel Spens was also a very active member of the Royal Company of Archers. This group started as a private club in 1676. It received a special Royal Charter from Queen Anne in 1704.

Archery Prizes and History

The Royal Company of Archers still competes for prizes today. One prize is the Pagodas Medal. Nathaniel's son, James Spens, gave this medal to the company to honor his father.

Nathaniel Spens's own bow is still on display. It is made of yew wood. His other son, Dr. Thomas Spens, gave the bow to the Royal Company.

Famous Portrait

A famous painting of Nathaniel Spens hangs in Archers' Hall in Edinburgh. It was painted by Sir Henry Raeburn. The painting shows Dr. Spens in his Royal Company of Archers uniform.

Nathaniel Spens and Freemasonry

Nathaniel Spens was also a Scottish Freemason. Freemasonry is a social and charitable organization. Members often meet in "lodges."

He joined Lodge Canongate Kilwinning in 1751. He later became the Master of that Lodge in 1778. He also held important roles in the Grand Lodge of Scotland. He was a Substitute Grand Master and a Depute Grand Master.

Later Life and Family

Nathaniel Spens passed away on June 21, 1815. He is buried in Leuchars Old Cemetery in Fife.

His son, Dr. Thomas Spens, followed in his father's footsteps. He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers. Like his father, he became the treasurer and president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Dr. Thomas Spens is known for describing a case of heart block in Britain for the first time.
