National Assembly (Hungary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The National Assembly (called Országgyűlés in Hungarian) is the main law-making body of Hungary. It's like the country's parliament, where important decisions are made and new laws are created.

The National Assembly has 199 members, also known as politicians. These members are chosen by the people of Hungary every four years in an election.

How Members Are Chosen

Members of the Assembly are chosen in two main ways. Some members are elected directly to represent specific areas of the country. Others are chosen from lists provided by political parties, based on how many votes each party gets across the country.

To get members from these party lists, a political party usually needs to win at least 5% of all the votes. However, if a person wins the election in their local area, they become a member of the Assembly no matter how many votes their party gets overall.

What the Assembly Does

The Assembly has 25 special groups called committees. These committees are very important. They discuss new ideas for laws before they are voted on by all the members. They also keep an eye on what government ministers are doing to make sure everything is working well.

A special court, called the Constitutional Court of Hungary, helps make sure that new laws are fair. This court can check if a new law follows the country's main rules, which are written in the Constitution.

The National Assembly meets in the beautiful Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest. This grand building has been its home since 1902.
