The National Guard of Hawaii was a special military group in Hawaii. It was created by the Provisional Government of Hawaii. Its main job was to help keep peace and deal with problems inside Hawaii.
How the Guard Started
The Hawaiian Monarchy was overthrown on January 17, 1893. After this, a new group called the Provisional Government of Hawaii took charge. Just ten days later, on January 27, 1893, they formed a new military force.
This new military was led by Colonel John Soper. It had four different groups, called companies. Three of these were National Guard companies, and one was a regular army company.
- A Company: This group was made up of volunteers from Germany. Charles W. Zeigler was their commander.
- B Company: Members of the Honolulu Rifles formed this company. Hugh Gunn was their commander.
- C Company: This group consisted of volunteers from Portugal. Joseph M. Camara was their commander.
- D Company: This was the regular army company. Like B Company, its members came from the Honolulu Rifles. John Good was their commander.
What the Guard Did
The National Guard of Hawaii was very active under the new government. They helped deal with internal conflicts.
One of their first actions was during the Leprosy War in 1893. They were called upon to help keep order during this time.
Later, when Hawaii became the Republic of Hawaii, the Guard was called into action again. This happened during the 1895 Counter-Revolution in Hawaii. They played a role in stopping this uprising.
The End of the Guard
Hawaii was later annexed by the United States. This meant it became a part of the U.S. as the Territory of Hawaii in 1898.
When this happened, the National Guard of Hawaii companies joined the Army National Guard system. They became part of the Hawaii Army National Guard. This new group continues to serve Hawaii today.
