National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day are special times in the United States. People celebrate them every year in July. National Ice Cream Day is always on the third Sunday of July. It's a fun way to enjoy one of America's favorite treats!

Celebrating Ice Cream in the USA

Ice cream is a popular dessert enjoyed by many people across the United States. To honor this beloved treat, the country sets aside a whole month and a special day each year. These celebrations encourage everyone to enjoy ice cream and learn about its history.

The Sweet Beginning: How Ice Cream Month Began

The idea for National Ice Cream Month and Day came from the United States Congress. This is where laws are made for the country. In 1984, two important requests, called "joint resolutions," were made.

  • One request, Joint Resolution 298, was sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston from Kentucky. He introduced it on May 17, 1984.
  • Another request, Joint Resolution 543, was sponsored by Representative Kika de la Garza from Texas. He introduced his request on April 11, 1984.

These requests asked Congress to officially recognize July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month." They also asked for July 15, 1984, to be "National Ice Cream Day."

President Reagan's Official Proclamation

After Congress agreed, the resolutions went to the President. On July 9, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed them into public law. This meant the celebration became an official rule for the country. He also made a special announcement called Presidential Proclamation 5219. This proclamation officially declared the celebration.

A Tradition That Continues

Even though the original law only mentioned July 1984 and July 15, 1984, the celebrations did not stop there. Ice cream companies and fans loved the idea so much that they kept the tradition going. Every year since 1984, July has been celebrated as National Ice Cream Month. The third Sunday in July is still National Ice Cream Day. It's a sweet tradition that continues to bring joy to many!
