Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The National Monuments Record of Scotland (NMRS) was a special collection of information. It kept records of old places, buildings, and important historical sites in Scotland. This collection was looked after by a group called the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.

This group, the Royal Commission, was first set up a long time ago by King George VI. Their main job was to find and list all the old buildings and historical places in Scotland. They wanted to record everything from the earliest times up to the year 1707. They also helped decide which of these old places were most important to save and protect.

Today, the name NMRS isn't used as much. Instead, people often say the National Record of the Historic Environment. The NMRS itself started when another collection, the Scottish National Buildings Record, joined the Royal Commission in 1966.

What the NMRS Recorded

The NMRS collected details on many historical sites. It has information on about 240,000 archaeological sites, monuments, and buildings. All this information is stored in a special computer database called CANMORE.

Beyond Just Sites

The NMRS didn't just record sites. It also held a huge collection of old photographs. There were also many drawings and important handwritten documents. These items help us learn even more about Scotland's past.
