National Register of Historic Places listings in Brown County, Texas facts for kids

Historic Places in Brown County
Brown County Jail
The old Brown County Jail is located at 401 West Broadway in Brownwood. It was built in 1903. This building served as the county jail for many years. It is a great example of the architecture from that time. The jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 22, 1983.
Greenleaf Fisk House
The Greenleaf Fisk House is found at 418 Milton Avenue in Brownwood. This historic home was built in 1880. It was once the house of Greenleaf Fisk, who was one of the important people who helped start the city of Brownwood. The house shows us what homes looked like in the late 1800s. It joined the National Register on February 25, 2004.
R. F. Hardin High School
R. F. Hardin High School is located at 1009 Hall Street. This school building was constructed in 1926. It served as an important place for education in the community for many years. The school was named after R. F. Hardin, a significant figure in local education. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1999.
Santa Fe Railroad Station
The Santa Fe Railroad Station is on Washington Avenue, between East Depot and East Adams Streets. This station was built in 1909. It was a very busy place where trains arrived and departed, connecting Brownwood to other parts of Texas and beyond. Railroads were super important for travel and trade back then. This station became a historic place on January 2, 1976.
St. John's Episcopal Church
St. John's Episcopal Church is at 700 Main Avenue in Brownwood. This beautiful church was built in 1905. It has been a place of worship and community gathering for over a century. The church's design is a wonderful example of early 20th-century architecture. It was listed on the National Register on September 4, 1979.
J. A. Walker House and R. B. Rogers House
These two historic homes, the J. A. Walker House and the R. B. Rogers House, are located next to each other at 701 and 707 Center Avenue. The J. A. Walker House was built in 1905, and the R. B. Rogers House was built in 1906. Both houses show the style of homes from the early 1900s. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places together on July 19, 1982.
