These are the very best examples of historic places in the country. Nantucket County has 4 places on the National Register, and 2 of them are National Historic Landmarks! Let's explore some of these amazing spots.

Cool Historic Places in Nantucket

Brant Point Light Station

The Brant Point Light Station is a lighthouse built in 1856. It stands right at the entrance to Nantucket Harbor. Lighthouses are super important because they help ships find their way safely into the harbor, especially at night or in bad weather. Imagine how many ships this light has guided over the years!

Jethro Coffin House

The Jethro Coffin House is a very old house on Sunset Hill in Nantucket. It was built way back in 1686! This makes it the oldest house on the entire island. It's amazing to think about how people lived in this house centuries ago. It's a great example of early American homes.

Nantucket Historic District

The Nantucket Historic District is not just one building, but a huge area that covers almost the entire Nantucket Island! It also includes two smaller islands nearby, Tuckernuck and Muskeget. This means that many of the old streets, homes, and buildings on Nantucket are protected. Walking through this district is like stepping back in time. You can see how the island looked many years ago.

Sankaty Head Light

Another famous lighthouse on Nantucket Island is the Sankaty Head Light. It was built in 1860 and stands at the eastern tip of the island, near a town called Siasconset. This lighthouse has a tall, distinctive tower and has been a guiding light for sailors for over 160 years. It's a beautiful landmark that helps keep the coast safe.

A Lighthouse That Moved!

There was once another important lighthouse called the Great Point Light, also known as Nantucket Light. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, the original lighthouse was sadly knocked down by a big storm in March 1984. But don't worry! A new lighthouse, which looks just like the old one, was built in its place in 1986. It's a great example of how we can rebuild and preserve history even after natural disasters.
