  • Apartment Building on Windsor Avenue and Brunswick St. (2049 Windsor Ave., SW): This building was added to the list on August 23, 2010.
  • Belle Aire (U.S. 11): Listed on April 15, 1975, this spot holds a piece of Roanoke's past.
  • Belmont Methodist-Episcopal Church (806 Jamison Ave., SE): This church became a historic site on August 18, 2011.
  • Boxley Building (416 Jefferson Street SW): Recognized on March 8, 1984, this building is a downtown landmark.

Some entire areas, called historic districts, are also recognized for their special history. These districts often have many old buildings that together tell a story about the past.

  • Campbell Avenue Complex (118-128 Campbell Avenue SW): This complex was listed on January 24, 1991.
  • Gainsboro Historic District (Bounded by Wells, Centre, 1st St. Bridge and Gilmer, Commonwealth, N. Jefferson and 2nd., Patton, Harrison etc.): This district was recognized on November 16, 2005.
  • Grandin Road Commercial Historic District (Grandin Road SW, and Memorial Avenue): This commercial area was added on November 27, 2002.
  • Henry Street Historic District (100 block of Henry Street NW): This street block became a historic district on November 27, 2004.
  • Melrose-Rugby Historic District (Mercer, Grayson, & Carroll Aves., NW., Rugby Blvd., NW., 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th Sts., NW.): This large district was listed on August 27, 2013.
  • Norfolk and Western Railway Company Historic District (88 and 108 Jefferson Street NW, and 209 Shenandoah Avenue): This district related to the railway was added on January 27, 1999.
  • Riverland Historic District (Laural, Primrose, Whitman, and Ivy Sts., Riverland Rd., and Walnut and Arbutus Aves.): This district was recognized on August 27, 2013.
  • Roanoke City Market Historic District (Roughly bounded by Williamson Rd., Norfolk Ave., S. Jefferson St., and Church Ave.; also 302 Campbell Ave., SE., and 9 Church Ave., SE.): This market area was listed on April 20, 1983, with more areas added on June 6, 2002.
  • Roanoke Downtown Historic District (Roughly bounded by 3rd St., Norfolk Ave., Jefferson St., and Bullitt Ave.; also 310-324 Salem Ave., SW; also 300-400 blocks of Church and 300-400 blocks of Luck Aves., SW., 600-700 blocks of S. Jefferson St., and 401 3rd and 502 5th Sts., SW.): The downtown area became a historic district on September 14, 2002, with more parts added on March 29, 2007, and August 27, 2013.
  • Roanoke River and Railroad Historic District (Albemarle and Walnut Aves., SE., Williamson Rd., SE., and 4th and Jefferson Sts., SE.): This district was listed on December 24, 2013.
  • Roanoke Warehouse Historic District (109-133 Norfolk Avenue SW): This warehouse area was recognized on March 29, 1983.
  • Salem Avenue-Roanoke Automotive Commercial Historic District (Generally Salem Ave., Rorer Ave., Campbell Ave., bet. 3rd and 6th Sts.; also the 400-600 blocks of Campbell Ave.; also the 700 block of Patterson Ave.): This commercial district was added on August 8, 2007, with more areas included on May 15, 2008, and October 22, 2014.
  • Southwest Historic District (Roughly bounded by Salem Ave., Jefferson St., Roanoke River and 20th St.): This large district was listed on June 19, 1985.
  • Wasena Historic District (Wiley Dr., Winchester, Winona, Wasena, Howbert, Valley, Hamilton, Kerns, Floyd & Summit Aves., Brighton Rd.): This district was recognized on January 3, 2012.

A Place No Longer on the List

Sometimes, a place might be removed from the National Register of Historic Places. This can happen for different reasons, like if the building is changed too much or is destroyed.

  • First Baptist Church (407 N. Jefferson Street): This church was listed on December 6, 1990. However, it was removed from the list on March 19, 2001, because it was sadly destroyed by a fire in April 1995.
