Neath Food and Drink Festival facts for kids
The Neath Food and Drink Festival is a fun annual food festival that takes place in Neath, a town in South Wales. It's a big event where people celebrate delicious Welsh cuisine and enjoy local treats.
About the Festival
This exciting festival happens every October and lasts for three days. It started in 2009 and became a three-day event in 2015, running from Friday to Sunday.
The festival is held right in the middle of Neath, which is a historic market town. It's a great way to discover and buy food and drinks made by local businesses. The event also teaches visitors about "food miles," which means how far food travels from where it's made to your plate. Buying local food helps reduce these miles and is better for the environment!
In 2018, a huge number of people, about 60,000, visited the festival. This shows how popular it is and how much it helps the local shops and restaurants in Neath.
Fun Activities and Food
The Neath Food and Drink Festival offers lots of cool things to do. You can watch local chefs show off their cooking skills in live demonstrations. There are also guided walks where you can learn about foraging for wild foods.
If you're interested in drinks, you might find cask ale tasting sessions. There are also hands-on cookery workshops where you can learn to make new dishes yourself!
In past years, the festival has had special areas like a street food zone in Angel Square, where you could sit on hay bales and enjoy tasty snacks. There was also a Champagne Tent and a Real Ale Hall in the Old Town Hall. Many local businesses in the town centre join in the fun by offering live music and special themed menus.
Who Organizes It?
The festival is put together by the Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council. They work with local businesses and community groups to make sure the event is a success every year.
In 2018, 62 special food and drink makers, called artisan traders, came to the festival. Most of them, about 77%, were from Wales. It's great that the festival supports new businesses too, as 18% of the traders had been in business for less than two years.
