Negley, Texas facts for kids
Negley is a small, unincorporated community located in Red River County, Texas, United States. It's about ten miles north of the town of Clarksville. In the year 2000, around 136 people lived in Negley. You can find it along Farm-to-Market Road 2118.
A Look Back at Negley's History
The area where Negley is located was first settled in the 1880s. The community grew around a sawmill. This sawmill was owned by W.C. Gough.
In 1892, a post office was opened in the community. The town was named Negley after Oliver P. Negley. He was one of the early settlers in that area.
The post office closed down twice. It first closed in 1908 but reopened in 1912. It then closed permanently in the 1960s.
Negley's population started to decrease a lot in 1927. The number of residents dropped from 100 to just 25 in about six years. However, since then, the population has grown back to about 136 people. This is even though there are no businesses open in the community today.

The weather in Negley has hot and humid summers. The winters are usually mild to cool. According to a system called the Köppen Climate Classification, Negley has a humid subtropical climate. This type of climate is often shown as "Cfa" on climate maps. It means the area has hot, humid summers and mild winters.
