In the exciting year of 1850, Negro Flat was a bustling place. It was one of the biggest spots for finding gold in Trinity County. Other important gold camps nearby included Gullion's Bar, Bestville, and Sawyers Bar. These camps were full of miners hoping to strike it rich.

Counties in California changed their borders quite a bit during those early days. In 1851, Negro Flat became part of a new area called Klamath County. Later, in 1874, Klamath County was officially closed down. Its land was then divided between Siskiyou County and Humboldt County. This is how Negro Flat ended up in Siskiyou County, where its site remains today.
