Neil O'Connell went to Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. In 1987, he was chosen for a special scholarship. He earned his first degree in mathematics in 1989 and also won a gold medal. He continued his studies and got another degree, an M.Sc., in 1990.
Later, he moved to the United States to study for his PhD. He earned this advanced degree in 1993 at UC Berkeley. His teacher there was Steven Neil Evans. After finishing his studies, he worked at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Warwick.
