History of Nejapa

Nejapa has an interesting past. It officially became a town in 1878. Later, in 1959, it was recognized as a city. The name "Nejapa" comes from an older village called Nixapa.

A long time ago, in November 1658, a volcano named El Playon erupted. This powerful eruption forced the people of the old Nixapa village to leave their homes. They moved and settled in the place where Nejapa is today. This event was a big part of the town's history.

How the Festival Works

During Las Bolas De Fuego, participants throw fireballs at each other. These fireballs are made from rags soaked in kerosene and wrapped in wire. People wear gloves and face protection. Even though it looks dangerous, very few serious injuries have been reported. It's a planned and controlled event that brings the community together.
