The tropical pinfly (Neosticta fraseri) is a type of damselfly. Damselflies are amazing insects, a bit like dragonflies, but they usually hold their wings together over their bodies when resting. This particular pinfly belongs to the family Isostictidae.
You can find the tropical pinfly in the warm, wet parts of north-eastern Queensland, Australia. It loves to live near streams, which are perfect places for it to hunt and lay its eggs.
What Does It Look Like?
The tropical pinfly is a medium-sized damselfly with a thin body. It's usually a dull brown or black color, but it has lighter markings that stand out. As these damselflies get older, their bodies might develop a light, powdery coating. This coating is called pruinescence, and it makes them look a bit dusty or frosty.
How It Got Its Name
This special damselfly is named after a famous English bug expert, Frederic Charles Fraser. He was an entomologist, which is a scientist who studies insects. F.C. Fraser drew pictures of this species back in 1960. At that time, it had a different name: Neosticta silvarum. Later, in 1991, it was officially named Neosticta fraseri to honor his work.
