Netscape Navigator was a very popular program for browsing the internet, also known as a web browser. It was first released in 1994. Many people used it during the 1990s to explore websites.

What Was Netscape Navigator?

Netscape Navigator was one of the first widely used web browsers. It helped people see websites and navigate the early internet. When it first came out, its computer code was kept private. This is called "closed source."

From Closed to Open Source

For a few years, Netscape Navigator was a "closed source" program. This meant its creators kept the details of how it was made a secret. But in 1999, they decided to make it "open source". This means they shared the code with everyone. Other computer programmers could then see how it worked and even help improve it.

Why Did Netscape Lose Popularity?

Netscape Navigator was very popular for a long time. However, by 1998, another web browser called Internet Explorer started to become more popular. This happened because Microsoft, the company that makes Windows 98, began including Internet Explorer with their Windows 98 computer operating system. This made it very easy for people to use Internet Explorer, and fewer people chose Netscape.
