The New Bridge Street drill hall is a building in Truro, Cornwall, that used to be a military training center. It was a place where soldiers practiced and prepared for their duties.

What Was a Drill Hall?

A drill hall is a special building used by the military or volunteer soldiers. It's a place where they can train indoors, practice marching, and learn military skills. Think of it like a gym or a practice field, but specifically for soldiers.

The Drill Hall's Early Days

This building was first built in the late 1800s. It was designed to be the main office, or headquarters, for a group of volunteer soldiers. This group was called the 1st Volunteer Battalion, The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. A battalion is a large group of soldiers, usually part of a bigger army unit.

A New Name and World War I

Over time, the 1st Volunteer Battalion changed its name. By 1908, it became known as the 4th Battalion, The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.

When World War I started in August 1914, this battalion got ready for war at the drill hall. This process is called mobilisation. After getting ready, the soldiers were sent, or deployed, all the way to India to serve.

Life After the Military

After the war, in 1921, the 4th Battalion joined together with another group, the 5th Battalion. When two groups join, it's called amalgamation. They formed a new, bigger group called the 4th/5th Battalion.

This new combined battalion moved to a different building in Truro called the Armoury. Because the soldiers had moved, the New Bridge Street drill hall was no longer needed for military use. It became surplus to requirements, meaning it was extra. The building was then decommissioned, which means it was officially taken out of military service. After that, it was changed into shops for people to use.
