The New Haven Jewish Home for the Aged is a special building in New Haven, Connecticut. It's a historic nursing home, which is a place where older people can live and receive medical care. This building, located at 169 Davenport Avenue, was one of the first places in Connecticut to offer housing and care for older Jewish people who needed help. It was finished in 1923 and has been made bigger several times since then. Because of its history and importance, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

What is the New Haven Jewish Home?

The New Haven Jewish Home for the Aged is found in the Hill neighborhood of New Haven. It is only a few blocks away from the Yale–New Haven Hospital. The building is quite large, with four stories, and is made from strong materials like brick, steel, and concrete.

A Look at the Building's Design

The oldest part of the building is at the corner of Davenport and Asylum streets. This section shows off a beautiful style called Beaux Arts. This style often includes grand designs and fancy details. The main entrance sticks out a little from the building's front, which has five sections. Newer parts of the building have been added to the back and side of this original section over the years.

Its History and Purpose

The idea for the New Haven Jewish Home started in 1914. It was the second organization of its kind in Connecticut, after a similar one in Hartford. A local women's group called the Sisters of Zion founded it. They first ran the home out of a regular house at the same address.

The home quickly grew because it helped many Jewish people from southern Connecticut, and even some from New York City. The oldest part of the building you see today was built between 1921 and 1923. It was designed by local architects named Brown and Von Beren. The building was made larger in 1950 and again in the mid-1970s. This happened even as the area around the home changed over time.
