How New Hope Baptist Church Started
New Hope Baptist Church began in a very simple way. It started as a small "mission" group. This group met in the home of two sisters, Addie and Maggie Vine. On June 2, 1903, the church officially formed. It was created by the growing African-American community in Newark. The church became an official organization on May 1, 1918.
Famous People from New Hope
Many well-known people have been part of the New Hope Baptist Church family. These include the famous pop and R&B singer Whitney Houston. She grew up attending this church and sang in its choir. Her cousins, Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, also attended. Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, has been an active member of the church her whole life. She also serves on the Deaconess Board.
