The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs (NJSFWC) is a large group of women who volunteer their time to help others. It was started in 1894 and is based in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This organization is the biggest volunteer group for women in New Jersey. It is also part of a larger national group called the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Today, about 8,000 women are members of the NJSFWC. They are part of 200 local clubs all over New Jersey. These clubs help women learn new things, become leaders, and serve their communities. They do this by working together on different projects. For example, in 1918, the NJSFWC helped create the New Jersey College for Women. This college is now known as Douglass Residential College. The NJSFWC still offers scholarships to students who attend Douglass.

How the NJSFWC Started and Grew

The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs has a long and interesting history. Since it began, the group has worked on many important projects. They have helped protect nature and supported education. They have also worked to improve libraries and make new laws.

Protecting Nature in New Jersey

The NJSFWC has played a big part in keeping New Jersey's natural beauty safe. One of their early efforts helped create the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. This commission was formed to protect a beautiful area of cliffs along the Hudson River called The Palisades. Their work helped make sure these natural lands would be saved for everyone to enjoy.

In 2003, the NJSFWC was named the "Grassroots Organization of the Year." This award came from the New Jersey Highlands Coalition. A "grassroots organization" means a group that gets its power from everyday people working together. This shows how much the NJSFWC cares about the environment.

Helping Pass Important Laws

The NJSFWC also works to make a difference through laws. In 2004, they started a big letter-writing campaign. They wrote to lawmakers in New Jersey and in the United States government. Their letters helped pass a very important law called the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act. This law helps protect the water supply in the Highlands region of New Jersey.

Supporting Libraries and Learning

The NJSFWC believes in the power of learning and reading. In 2004, the New Jersey Library Association gave the NJSFWC its "Library Champions Award." This award recognized the group's strong support for libraries across the state. They have helped make sure that people have access to books and information.
