The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs (NJSFWC) is a large group of women who volunteer their time to help others. It was started in 1894 and is based in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The NJSFWC is the biggest volunteer organization for women in New Jersey. It is also part of a larger group called the General Federation of Women's Clubs. About 8,000 women are members, spread across 200 local clubs throughout New Jersey. These clubs help women learn new things, develop leadership skills, and serve their communities.

A big achievement for the NJSFWC was helping to create the New Jersey College for Women in 1918. This college is now known as Douglass Residential College. The NJSFWC still offers scholarships to students at Douglass today.

What the NJSFWC Does

The NJSFWC works on many projects to make New Jersey a better place. They focus on education, helping communities, and protecting the environment.

Protecting Nature

The NJSFWC has played a big part in protecting New Jersey's natural beauty.

Saving The Palisades

The NJSFWC helped create the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. This group works to protect The Palisades, which are tall cliffs along the Hudson River. Their efforts helped keep these beautiful areas safe for everyone to enjoy.

Honored for Environmental Work

In 2003, the New Jersey Highlands Coalition named the NJSFWC the "Grassroots Organization of the Year." This award recognized their efforts to protect natural areas. A "grassroots organization" is a group that starts from ordinary people working together in their local communities.

Protecting Water Resources

In 2004, the NJSFWC led a campaign to protect the state's water. They wrote many letters to lawmakers in New Jersey and the U.S. government. This helped pass the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act. This law helps protect important water sources in the Highlands region of New Jersey.

Supporting Libraries

The NJSFWC also supports libraries across the state. In 2004, the New Jersey Library Association gave the NJSFWC its "Library Champions Award." This award recognized their strong support for libraries and reading.

Important People

Over the years, many women have been important leaders in the NJSFWC.

  • Mrs. L. Dow Balliett (1847-1929) was the Director of Music for the NJSFWC.
  • Ida Wharton Dawson (1860-1928) served as a President of the NJSFWC.
