The New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (often called CYFD) is a special group in New Mexico. It works to help kids, teens, and families across the state. Their main office is in the PERA Building in Santa Fe. CYFD helps protect children and works with young people in the justice system. This department started in 1992 to make sure children and families in New Mexico are safe and supported.
Who Leads the Department?
The CYFD is led by a person called a Secretary. The Governor of New Mexico chooses this Secretary. After the Governor picks someone, the New Mexico Senate must agree with the choice. The Secretary is also part of the Governor's main team, known as the New Mexico Governor's Cabinet. Recent Secretaries under Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham include Brian Blalock, Barbara Vigil, and the current Secretary, Teresa Casados.
Places Where CYFD Helps Young People
The Juvenile Justice Services/Facilities (JJS) is a part of CYFD. This division runs special centers for young people. These centers are sometimes called juvenile correctional facilities. They help young people who are involved in the justice system.
CYFD Facilities
Here are some of the places that CYFD operates:
- Area 1
- Albuquerque Boys Center
- Albuquerque Girls Reintegration Center
- Camino Nuevo Youth Center (this center is for female youth)
- Carlsbad Community Reintegration Center
- Eagle Nest Reintegration Center
- J. Paul Taylor Center
- YDDC (NMGS)
A place called the New Mexico Boys School opened a long time ago, on October 1, 1909. CYFD closed it in 2005. It was then given to the New Mexico Corrections Department. Today, it is known as the Springer Correctional Facility.
