Who Can Enter the Competition?
Any company or group that makes or sells extra virgin olive oil can enter the NYIOOC. This includes farms, factories that press olives, co-ops, and even companies that bottle or sell the oil. They pay a fee to enter their olive oil brands into the contest.
How the Winners Are Chosen
The competition takes place over several days in New York City. A team of expert judges tastes and evaluates all the olive oils. They look for the best flavors and qualities. The judges decide which oils deserve awards.
Recent Competition Results
In the 2020 NYIOOC, there were 881 different olive oils entered. Out of these, 584 oils won awards. This included 396 Gold Awards for excellent oils and 188 Silver Awards for very good oils.
Italy won the most awards that year, with 139 winning olive oils. Spain came next with 105 awards. The United States won 74 awards, while producers from Greece won 70. Croatia also did well, winning 60 awards.
When Are the Winners Announced?
The winners of the competition are announced at a special press conference. This event happens in New York on the very last day of judging. It's an exciting time for all the olive oil producers!
