Newbridge's Story
The village of Newbridge grew up around its railway line. The railway station was built in 1876. It was first called Back Creek. A post office opened two months later. It was named Duramana. To avoid confusion, the station, post office, and village were renamed Newbridge. This might have been because many Irish settlers lived there. They may have thought of Newbridge in Ireland. Or, it could be because a new pedestrian bridge opened at the station.
During the 1880s, people found gold and iron nearby. They mined these valuable metals in the area. Today, the village continues to thrive. It is still connected to the local farming community.
Many old buildings still stand in Newbridge. These include the Gladstone Hotel, built in the early 1870s. The public school opened in 1877. There is also the original bakehouse from 1884. The police station was built in the 1890s. A convent also dates back to the 1890s. The new post office opened in 1904. The Catholic Church was built in 1919.
