Newman, Texas facts for kids
Newman is a small neighborhood located in El Paso, Texas. It's way out in the far Northeast El Paso area, about 16 miles from the busy downtown part of El Paso. You can find it near where Dyer Street and Edge of Texas Drive meet, right on the border with New Mexico. Sometimes, people still think of Newman as its own little community, even though it's part of El Paso.
What is Newman?
Newman is a quiet place that was once a very small settlement. In 1990, only about 60 people lived there. Even earlier, in 1930, the United States Census recorded just 10 residents! It's a good example of how some areas start out tiny and then grow, or stay small and become part of a larger city.
How Did Newman Get Its Name?
This neighborhood was named after a man called Henry L. Newman. He was a real estate developer, which means he bought land and tried to build new communities or sell plots of land for others to build on. Before trying his luck in Texas, he actually tried to create a community called Newman, New Mexico, just across the border. That project didn't go very well. He had a little more success in Texas, but Newman remained a very small place.
A Look at Newman's Past
Even though Newman was small, it had some important services. For example, it had its own post office for many years. The post office opened in 1922 and stayed open until 1971. This shows that even tiny communities need ways for people to send and receive mail, connecting them to the wider world.
