Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was a famous scientist and President of the Royal Society.

The Newton International Fellowship is a special award named after the famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton. It helps talented researchers from other countries come to the United Kingdom to do advanced studies, called postdoctoral research, at universities and other institutions.

What is the Newton Fellowship?

This important award was created by three big organizations in the UK: the Royal Society, the British Academy, and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Every year, about 25 of the brightest young researchers from all over the world receive this fellowship. These researchers work in many different fields, from sciences (like physics or biology) to humanities (like history or literature).

Why was it created?

The main goals of the Newton Fellowship are to:

  • Bring the best young researchers to the UK.
  • Help build stronger connections between these researchers' home countries and the UK.

How does it help researchers?

Newton Fellows receive full funding for two years. They also get up to £8,000 each year to help with their research costs. This money helps them continue their studies and work closely with other researchers in the UK.

Who can apply for the award?

To be considered for a Newton International Fellowship, applicants must meet certain requirements:

  • They cannot be citizens of the UK.
  • They must be working outside the UK when they apply.
  • They need to have a PhD degree by the time the award starts. A PhD is the highest university degree you can get.
  • They should not have more than seven years of full-time research experience after getting their PhD. This includes any time spent teaching or working in companies. Some breaks, like for family reasons, are not counted.
