Nicholas Bagenal was an important English politician who lived a long time ago, from 1629 to 1712. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Anglesey, an island off the coast of Wales.

About Nicholas Bagenal

Nicholas Bagenal was born in Bath, England. His father was Arthur Bagenal. His mother was Magdalene Trevor, whose father was Sir Richard Trevor. Nicholas was also the grandson of Henry Bagenal, a famous military leader in Ireland.

Nicholas owned large properties, called estates. These included Plas Newydd in Anglesey, Wales, and land in Newry, County Down, which is now in Northern Ireland.

His Work as a Politician

Nicholas Bagenal held several important jobs during his life. He helped manage taxes in Anglesey and Caernarvon at different times.

In 1661, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Anglesey. This meant he helped make laws for the country. He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant, helping to keep order and manage local military matters. He was also a Custos Rotulorum for Anglesey, which meant he was in charge of keeping public records.

In 1664, Nicholas Bagenal became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a group of very smart people who study science and improve knowledge.

His Family and Legacy

Nicholas Bagenal did not have any children who lived longer than he did. Because of this, his family estates went to his cousins after he passed away. His properties eventually went to other important families, like the Marquess of Anglesey and the Earl of Kilmorey.

Nicholas was married twice. His first wife was Sidney Grosvenor, but they did not have any children who survived. His second wife was Lady Anne Charlotte Bruce. They had a son named Nicholas Bagenall and a daughter named Elizabeth Bagenal, but sadly, both of his children died when they were very young.
