Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nicholas Randall lived a long time ago, from around 1519 to about 1562. He was an English politician who worked in the government during the reigns of King Edward VI and Queen Mary I. He was elected to Parliament six times between 1547 and 1559.

Nicholas Randall's Life

Nicholas Randall was a respected landowner, known as a yeoman, from the town of Truro in Cornwall, England. In 1540, he rented land in Truro that had once belonged to a group of monks called the Black Friars. He rented this land for 21 years.

Important Roles and Jobs

Nicholas Randall held several important jobs. From 1542, he was the constable of Trematon Castle. A constable was like a manager or guardian of the castle. He was also the havener for the Duchy of Cornwall. This meant he was in charge of the harbors and collected taxes on goods that came in and out of the Duchy's ports.

Starting in 1543, he became the bailiff for Aylewarton (also known as Alverton) and Penzance. A bailiff was a local official who helped manage land and collect rents. In 1546, he also rented the manor of Tybesta in Creed.

Serving in Parliament

Nicholas Randall was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Truro in 1547. This meant he represented the people of Truro in the English government.

He served in Parliament again in 1553 for two different sessions. First, he worked alongside Thomas Roydon, and then with John Methnes. Around 1554 or 1555, he became the comptroller and collector of customs for the Duchy of Cornwall. This job involved managing and collecting taxes on imported and exported goods.

He continued his political career, serving as an MP for Truro again in 1555, this time with Thomas Randall. He was also an MP in 1558 with Thomas Royson, and for a final time in 1559.

Nicholas Randall passed away sometime before May 1562. His wife was likely named Alice.
