Nickels (game) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nickels is a fun game played with coins. You can use any type of coin you like. It's usually played on a smooth, hard surface. This could be next to a wall, like the side of a building. Or it could be near a street curb. The main goal is to throw your coin. You want it to land closer to the wall than anyone else's coin.

Setting Up Your Game Area

To play Nickels, you need a special area. This area helps keep the game fair. Here are the important parts:

  • Foul Line: This is a line you can't step over. If you cross it when you throw, you lose that round.
  • Goal Line: This line is across from the foul line. It's the wall or curb you aim for.
  • Boundary Lines: These lines mark the sides of the playing area. No coins or people should go past these lines.

How to Play Nickels

Nickels has simple rules. Following them makes the game fun for everyone. Here are the main rules:

  • Don't Cross the Line: You must stay behind the foul line when you throw. If your foot crosses it, you lose that turn.
  • Stay In Bounds: Your coin must land inside the boundary lines. If it goes outside, you lose that coin.
  • Bouncing is Okay: It's fine if your coin bounces off the goal line (the wall or curb). This is allowed.
  • Clear the Area: Make sure the playing area is clear. If your coin hits something else, it's called "interference." An interfered coin is lost, just like one that goes out of bounds.
  • Winning Coins: The game is played in rounds. The person whose coin lands closest to the wall wins all the coins thrown in that round. Sometimes, players agree to play "friendly" rounds. In these rounds, no one wins the coins. They are just for practice.
