Nickleberry probably got its name from the Nickleberry family. They lived in this area a long time ago, around the early 1900s. By 1983, the community had a church and a local business. Nickleberry is located in the northwestern part of Cass County. You can find it on Farm to Market Road 1399. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) southeast of a town called Marietta.

In the 1940s, Nickleberry became important for education. It was the center of a school district for African American students in the county. This school was still open and helping students in 1983. Today, students in the Nickleberry area attend schools in the Pewitt Consolidated Independent School District.
