Nicolás Enríquez de Vargas (born 1704, died 1790) was an important painter from New Spain. New Spain was the name for Mexico during the time it was a Spanish colony. Nicolás Enríquez learned how to paint from another famous artist named Juan Rodríguez Juárez.

About His Life
We don't know much about Nicolás Enríquez's early life. We only have records of him starting from 1722. In 1728, he worked with another artist, José de Ibarra. Together, they helped start the Academia de Pintores (Painters Academy) in New Spain. This academy was a very important art school. It later became the famous Real Academia de San Carlos. Many of Nicolás Enríquez's paintings can still be found in the city of Guadalajara.
Famous Paintings
Here are some of Nicolás Enríquez's well-known works:
- Matanza de los Santos Inocentes (Massacre of the Holy Innocents), painted in 1737. This painting is now at the Museo Soumaya.
- Retrato de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (Portrait of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz). This painting is kept at the Philadelphia Art Institute.
