Nicola Hicks facts for kids
Nicola Hicks is a talented English sculptor, born in London in 1960. She is famous for creating amazing sculptures, often using materials like straw and plaster.
About Nicola Hicks
Nicola Hicks studied art at the Chelsea School of Art from 1978 to 1982. She then continued her studies at the Royal College of Art from 1982 to 1985.
Animals are Nicola's favorite subjects to sculpt. She often uses straw and plaster to create her animal figures. This was quite unusual for an artist in the 1980s. At that time, many artists were making abstract sculptures or installation art.
Besides sculptures, Nicola also creates large, energetic charcoal drawings on big sheets of brown paper. Many of her sculptures are later cast in bronze. The bronze copies are so detailed that you can still see the textures of the original plaster and straw.
A well-known sculptor named Elisabeth Frink recognized Nicola's talent early on. She chose Nicola for a special art show in 1985. This show was at Angela Flowers's gallery.
Nicola has become a very successful artist. She has created public sculptures that people can see in different cities. These include a sculpture called Beetle in Bristol. She also made the second version of the Brown Dog Memorial in Battersea Park, London.
Her artwork has been shown in major museums and galleries around the world. In 1995, Nicola Hicks was given an award called an MBE. This award recognized her important contributions to the art world. In 2010, her sculpture "Black" (made in 2008) was part of an exhibition at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
