Nikolay Makarov's Life Story
Nikolay Makarov was born on May 22, 1914, in a village called Sasovo. His father worked on the railway. In 1936, Nikolay started studying at the Tula Mechanical Institute, a special school for engineers.
Becoming an Engineer
When World War II began and the Axis powers invaded, Nikolay was almost finished with his studies. He quickly became an engineer and was sent to work at a factory. This factory later moved to a safer place in Kirov Oblast.
In 1944, Nikolay returned to Tula and finished his studies with top honors.
Designing the Makarov Pistol
In 1945, Nikolay joined a special competition. The goal was to design a new pistol for the army. They needed to replace older models like the TT pistol and the Nagant M1895 revolver. Nikolay's design was very good. It used some ideas from the German Walther PP pistol. His design won the competition, and the army started using his pistol in 1951. This pistol became known as the Makarov pistol.
