The Nimanburu were an Aboriginal Australian people. They lived in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. They are an important part of Australia's rich history and culture.

Who Were the Nimanburu?

The Nimanburu people were one of the many Aboriginal groups in Australia. They had their own unique way of life, language, and traditions. Their history is deeply connected to the land they lived on.

Where Did the Nimanburu Live?

The Nimanburu people lived along the coast of King Sound in Western Australia. Their traditional lands covered about 1,200 square miles (3,100 km²). This area stretched from Repulse Point southwards to the swampy plains where the Fraser River meets the sea. Their land also went inland as far as the beginning of the Fraser River.

Norman Tindale, a famous researcher, helped map out the traditional lands of many Aboriginal groups, including the Nimanburu.

Nimanburu Language

The Nimanburu people spoke the Nimanburu language. This language was part of a group called the Nyulnyulan languages. Other Aboriginal groups described their language as a "heavy" way of speaking, similar to the language of the Warrwa people.

Life by the Coast

Even though the Nimanburu lived right by the coast, they were not known for traveling much by sea. Unlike some other groups in the King Sound area, they did not often use rafts for long journeys on the water. They focused more on life on the land.

Other Names for the Nimanburu

Over time, the Nimanburu people were known by a few different names. These include:

  • Nimanboro
  • Nimanbur
  • Ninambur
  • Wadiabulu (This name was given to them by the Nyigina people, and it's known as an exonym, which means a name given by an outside group.)
