Nityananda Mahapatra (born June 17, 1912 – died April 17, 2012) was an important person from India. He was an Odia politician, a poet, and a journalist. He wrote many books and also worked to help his country.

Nityananda Mahapatra's Political Journey
Nityananda Mahapatra was very active in politics. He was even put in prison three times by the British Raj (the British rule in India). This was between 1930 and 1942. He was fighting for India's freedom.
After India became independent, he became well-known as a writer. He was the editor of an Odia magazine called Dagara. He also wrote many short stories.
Serving in the Assembly
In his political career, Nityananda Mahapatra served as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. This is like a state parliament. He was a member from 1957 to 1971. From 1967 to 1971, he also worked as a state minister. He was in charge of Supply and Cultural Affairs.
His Later Years and Passing
Nityananda Mahapatra passed away on April 17, 2012. He was almost 100 years old. He died in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, due to breathing problems.
His Literary Creations
Nityananda Mahapatra was a talented writer. He translated a famous Tamil story called Ramavataram into the Odia language. This story is also known as the Kamba Ramayanam. He also translated other works, like those by Ramana Maharshee and Swarajya Sanghitaa, into Odia.
Awards for His Writing
Nityananda Mahapatra received several important awards for his literary work.
- He won the Odisha Sahitya Academy Award in 1974.
- In 1987, he received the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award. He earned this award for his novel called Gharadiha.
