Early Life and Military Service
Noël Bowater was the oldest son of Sir Frank Bowater. His mother was Ethel Anita Fryar. He went to a well-known school called Rugby School in Rugby, England.
He served in the military during the First World War. This was a major global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1919. During his service, he showed great bravery. In 1917, he received the Military Cross, which is a special award for courage in battle.
After the war, Noël Bowater was honored by several countries. He became a Knight Commander of the Order of the Polar Star from Sweden. He also received an award called the Order of Menelik II from Ethiopia. He was also made a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. These awards showed his importance and contributions.
Business and City Leadership
Working with Paper
Noël Bowater became a top leader at the Bowater Paper Corporation. This was a big company that made paper. As a vice-chairman, he helped guide the company's important decisions.
Becoming Lord Mayor
In 1947, Noël Bowater took over his father's special title. He became the 2nd Baronet Bowater, a title passed down in his family.
He served as the Sheriff of the City of London in 1948. This role helps with law and order in the city. Later, in 1953, he became the Lord Mayor of London. This is a very old and important job. The Lord Mayor represents the City of London and its businesses.
The next year, he received another high honor. He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. This is a very prestigious award from the United Kingdom. He also became the Master of the Worshipful Company of Vintners. This is one of London's historic trade groups, linked to the wine industry. He also held the position of Lord Lieutenant of the City of London. This role represents the King or Queen in the city.
Family Life
On February 1, 1921, Noël Bowater married Constance Bett. They had three children together. Constance passed away in 1993.
Noël Bowater died on January 22, 1984. His son, Euan, then became the 3rd Baronet.
